CBG for treating Glaucoma

What is Glaucoma?

Our eyes are a very important organ as they allow us to send visual information to the brain and work simultaneously to piece together objects and bring them into focus.

Unfortunately, many eye conditions and injuries can cause damage to our sight. In this case we will be going over glaucoma and the symptoms that come along with this illness.

Glaucoma is an eye condition that causes damage to the ocular nerve which leads to high levels of pressure in the eyes. This abnormality can cause fluid to build up and result in more pressure being produced. Most people aren’t aware that they have it.

It’s important to get regular eye checkups. If left untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness.

A little background on CBG

The cannabis sativa plant is widely known for its use for medicinal purposes. The species of Cannabis Sativa encompass a variety of plants. The ones we most commonly known are cannabis (higher in THC) and Hemp (higher in CBD). CBD is often defined as the ‘healing’ cannabinoid.

CBG is often referred to as the ‘mother cannabinoid’ as all of the cannabinoids in the plant’s flower start out as CBG. As the flower develops and grows, the sunlight and growth act to transform the CBG into other cannabinoids like CBD, CBN, CBC, THC.

Little was known about CBG until recently as it usually only occurs in small amounts in the mature flower of the hemp plant. Through cross breeding Hemp plants – botanists have been able to create a plant that is high in CBG with mature flowers. This CBG is then extracted from the plant and used to make creams, tinctures & oils, balms etc.

Fortunately, in the past 10 years there has been more interest in the healing properties of CBG. Several clinical trials have outlined its unique ability to act as an antibacterial and an antifungal.

Why use CBG for glaucoma?

Since CBG acts as a precursor it has been indicated to have potential beneficial effects (1) on many illnesses. This includes Parkinson’s disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, and intraocular pressure (which often occurs with glaucoma. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to blindness.

Reducing intraocular pressure within the eye is extremely beneficial for treating glaucoma. Some of the available prescription medicines carry many unwanted and unpleasant side effect. CBG is a great option as there are usually no side effects.

Like other active compounds both CBD and CBG are non-psychoactive. This is a reason many people opt for using THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is the active substance that causes a psychotropic effect on the central nervous system.

You can rest assured that CBG is non intoxicating and can act as an antagonist to any THC. CBG is safe and effective, but you should always consult with your physician if you are on other medications.

So why use CBG products? Research (2) has shown that CBG has been linked to many benefits to help relieve the symptoms caused by glaucoma.

Our eyes embody endocannabinoid receptors which are recognized as a significant modulatory system in the brain and immune tissue function. These receptors also take on a huge role in the production of stress responses and hormones. Our endocrine system is a whole complex network that is all interconnected with many organs including our eyes.

CBG has many anti-inflammatory properties which will relieve intraocular pressure caused by glaucoma. There are many CBG products available to help treat glaucoma:
